To get full advantage of SL-Messenger, you should go through the 3 sections of the Configuration menu : Profile, IM, uBlogging.
Setting up your profile should be the first thing to do when joining SL-Messenger. You can upload a picture of yourself, a picture of your avatar will be better. Then you can add some info about you such as your home sim in Second Life and your blog / personal url
You can change your password through the "change password" link - please be careful, your password must be of at least 8 characters long.
The IM section lets you enter your login/passwords to your IM networks that you want reachable from Second Life. Pressing "Save" lets you access the desired IM network. Pressing "Unsuscribe" cancels the suscription and will prevent you from logging in to those IMs while in Second Life. You can subscribe to one or many of those networks.
The uBlogging section lets you register your Twitter account details thus enabling you to twitt from Second Life. To do that you will need first to have a working Twitter account.
Sl-Messenger is a great way to keep track of your own encounters or discoveries in Second Life and to discover new people and places.
This is done in the "Private history" and "Public" sections.
The Private history section is split in 3 functions :
- * Places : Gives you a list of the places you visited the date of visit and the people that were in your vicinity while in that location.
Cliching on the place name gets you to the place page where you will be able to see a map of the location, a list of the avatars you encountered there and, if any, your comments / snapshots followed by other people's snapshots / comments - * My bookmarks : lists all the notes you have made from Second Life, wether by twitting or sending shots. You can edit your notes by clicking the "edit" button near title and body or even erase them by clicking on "X" on the top right corner of each note.
- * Messages : This section hold the internal messages sent by friends or people that saw your blog widget. Those have been delivered inworld but can be found in that section for your record.
The public section holds agregated data from all the members of SL-Messenger to let you discover new stuff in Second Life and is split in 3 sections :
- * Latest places : Holds the list of latest locations visited by SL-Messenger user
- * Popular places : Holds the list of the places most often visited by Sl-Messenger users
- * Bookmarks : Holds the latest twits/bookmarks/snapshots triggered by SL-Messenger users
SL-Messenger lets you communicate with all your Instant Messengers buddys in a very easy way.
First, of all you must have one or many accounts configured through the online SL-Messenger web-site, if you need some help on that check the configuration > IM section.
When your account(s) is(are) configured, you can now log in Second Life and list all your contacts by typing "/12 list".
If you want to limit the output to the , just type "/12 la". The output looks as follows :

As you can see next to the user name is a figure which will be referred to as its "ID". To talk to a user simply type "/12 ID this is my message to you".
Once the message is sent, a confirmation will occur as shown in the following screenshot. You can now have easy conversations with all your buddies !

FAQ:
Q: I don't see all my buddies
A: Try to purge the list of your contacts by doing "/12 purge" - all your contact list and status will be reset. There is a limit to the number of contats the watch can hold (a few hundreds). I f you really have a lot of buddies you might have reached the limit !
Q: For a same person a different ID shows for outgoing and incoming messages
A : This issues is solved by purging the list of contacts : "/12 purge"
SL-Messenger lets you share your dicoveries/feelings in Second Life in just one click to all your Twitter followers.
First, you need to have a twitter account and set it up on SL-Messenger by providing your credentials on the configuration > ublogging section. Inworld simply type "/82 twitt mymessage" and your twitt will be instantly sent to twitter.
A confirmation message will show as follow :

Your twitt will be displayed as follow :

Where tinyurl will direct to the location of the sim the twitt was sent from and letting thus your friends join you inworld easily.
Once this is done, a new mark will be also created in your "Private history > my bookmarks" section with the text previously sent and will be added in the sim page.
FAQ:
Q: The twitts don't seem to get through.
A: Try checking your twitter login/pwd
SL-Messenger lets you mash-up views from Second Life with 2D maps. In a few clicks you can take a shot, add a title and a comment and it will appear in both your bookmark section and on the sim page.
The process is really easy, from your Second Life viewer select "File > Take Snapshot" and send it to "slm@sl-messenger.com".

Once this is done, a new mark will be created in your "Private history > my bookmarks" section with the picture and text previously sent.
In that section you can also edit your post or delete it.
The shot will also be added in the sim page and a pin will be added on the sim map to mark the location where the picture was taken.
FAQ:
Q: The picture I just submitted is not showing up
A: Give a few minutes for the picture to show up ... something getting the image out of SL takes a while
Q: The quality of the picture is poor
A: You can change the resolution settings of the picture before uploading it - try to go above 1024x768
